Global Conference on SDG 7

On February 21-23, 2018, the UN Global Conference on SDG 7 is taking place in Bangkok, Thailand.

Recognizing the fundamental role of sustainable energy in achieving almost all sustainable development goals, ranging from

eradicating poverty through progress in health, education, water and industrialization, combating climate change, a global preparatory meeting in support of the review of SDG7 at the UN Political Summit Forum, this conference is being held from 21 to 23 February 2018 in Bangkok, UNESCAP. The Global Conference on SDG7 brings together key stakeholders from governments, the UN system and other international organizations, the private sector and civil society to engage in a dialogue that highlights the integrated and cross-cutting nature of sustainable energy and its multiple roles in supporting the achievement of the SDGs.

A representative of the Our Century Foundation had the opportunity to participate in this global event thanks to the support of the Travel Grants program from the Soros Foundation-Kyrgyzstan.

As part of this conference, participants took part in plenary sessions and seminars organized by civil society organizations. Actively participated in sessions and workshops. We exchanged experiences and met significant representatives of all stakeholders (governments, business sector and CSOs) for further potential cooperation and interaction.

President of the UN General Assembly Miroslav Lajcak: “2.2 billion people do not have access to electricity. Lack of electricity causes poverty. The UN must strengthen intergovernmental cooperation…”.

Shamshad Akhthar, Executive Secretary of ESCAP: “90% of the population has access to electricity. 420 million people (Asia-Pacific) remain without access to electricity. The state of rural electrification remains a challenge. 50% of our region is the 2nd lowest… to clean fuels. Energy efficiency continues to fall.
